All seminars and gatherings are to be held at the Pacific Seacraft factory.

Saturday: October 25

8:00  WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION

8:30  WEATHER 101  -  Chris Parker 

Basics of weather, including discussion of energy transfer; synoptic weather features (Highs, Lows, etc.) and pressure gradient; lift and atmospheric dynamics; local effects; what you need to know about upper-air weather; interpreting weather fax charts.

9:30  ENGINES, SPARES AND MAINTENANCE  -  Frank Smith

General discussion and question and answer session.  Please come prepared with specific questions to make this a really meaningful experience.

10:30 SAFETY - DEALING WITH EMERGENCIES  -  Wade Dale

Learn about current safety and emergency products and their proper implementation prior to needing them in a true emergency situation.  Discussion of proper use of  PFDs (They only work if you wear them) EPIRBs, Man Overboard Systems and Liferafts.  Actual deployment of liferaft (on land).

1:15  NUMERICAL WEATHER PREDICTION  -  Chris Parker

Today, most of us have used raw computer-generated forecasts, including GRIB files.  Understand what these products are, how to obtain them, realize their strengths & weaknesses, and learn how to interpret these forecasts.

2:30  THE CRUISING LIFE - George Day

George, who, personally and professionally, has been able to experience the journey many cruisers dream about will share stories from his 5 year circumnavigation with his wife, Rosa, and their two sons.

9:00   COMMUNICATIONS OPTIONS  -  Chris Parker

Discussion of "pros" and "cons" of the various options for voice and data communications - from the familiar VHF & SSB to wi-fi and various satellite options, including the new iSatphone and BGAN.

10:15 HEAVY WEATHER OFFSHORE SAILING  -  Syd Millman

Discussion of the proper equipment and techniques for off-shore heavy weather sailing. Choosing the proper sails (such as the Gale Sail), and/or furling/reefing systems and how to use them.

11:30  PHOTOGRAPHY FOR SAILORS  -  Bill Kund

Discussion and question and answer session focusing on composition, lighting and proper exposure.  (Because of the wide variety of cameras on the market we can’t teach you how to use your camera.  Please study your manual)

1:30  HOW TO CREATE A FORECAST FOR YOUR VESSEL  -  Chris Parker

First - look outside!  Then obtain the proper observational data & forecast information, and interpret it properly.  I show you what data to obtain, how to obtain it (including discussion of communications options for your vessel), and what to do with the information after you receive it.

2:30  SAIL TRIM  -  Syd Millman

Proper sail trim is not just for racers. Proper sail trim will make your journey safer and more comfortable. Discussion of sail trim and the proper hardware needed to make it happen.
